THE CREATIVE LEAP: AFFECT CONTAGION, CONTEMPORARY CULTURE AND CLASSIC SOCIOLOGY

What is the nature of the spark that leaps from one body to another to light the fire of imitation? How do we think the tensions between imitation and suggestion: is it the first body that suggest something to the second, or the second that imitates the first? Where does agency lie in this process, and how might affect be involved in it? This paper uses the image of the leap in the work of Bergson and Darwin to consider questions of the collectivity (rather than the individuality) of creativity and innovation in contemporary culture.

The lecture is open to everyone.
